What's up with these spammers?

Post by xplosiw » Fri Sep 23, 2016 6:43 am

I think we need a moderator who can delete posts and ban the spam accounts. AlwaysBeNice doesn't have the ability to always be here deleting spam threads. Right now there are five new spam topics and three new spam posts on Bashar channelings alone. Someone who lives in Europe on a different timezone who can monitor while AlwaysBeNice is sleeping.

Should we vote for a moderator?

I think AlwaysBeNice is in Europe.
But you're right this spamming is getting out of hands ... I already reported a bunch of stuff last evening.

Is there a captcha upon registration? That's usually enough to deter spammers. If not, the other technique that's commonly used is to make links nofollow, or better yet nofollow for newbie accounts.

I found captcha to be really ineffective, maybe I didn't have a hard enough one, but the hardest one was pretty annoying. Supposedly answering a question does work well, though not so much anymore. Maybe this russian hive stops as they see it gets moderated pretty well.

What do you mean with nofollow?

The reason spammers want to post is so that the search engines will find their links, which artificially increases the "popularity" metric of those links/pages/sites. If a link has the HTML attribute rel="nofollow", then the links are ignored by the search engines, so the spammers have no motivation to post.

Would that be effective you think?

Also, you think it would be really effective for my sites, like www.bestufoevidence.weebly.com if I made a topic and post that link a lot?
Ethically speaking, it's simply the best ufo website so it should be higher up.

By putting it in your signature you give it as much link juice as this website is worth.

Implementing nofollow for newbie accounts is an effective solution, yes, if the phpBB software allows it. I think all softwares otherwise allow making ALL links nofollow, but this breaks the spirit of the hypertext web in the name of stopping spammers.

Can't find a quick link and I already try to shun these complicated matters. I'll just have to keep it at 5 clicks per spammer for now, thanks for thinking with though.

What to do with the messages those Russian spammers are sending? Simply deleting them?

Yeah I'm deleting them as soon as I see them. I'm checking every hour or so for new posts and they are really easy to spot. Too bad sometimes I'm excited for a new reply but it's just a bot. Usually if it's not a nickname I recognise it's a spammer.

Changed the register question, should be good now, for some time at least
